A good build management system is almost transparent to the developers and gives the project manager the ability to have an always up to date view of the development process, and to control the timely delivery of patches and releases. Combined with automated regression tests it ensures the quality of the software product.
There is no full automation for every problem that occurs during development but a properly maintained build system gives a lot to a project.
